Lorne Mayencourt, MLA, Vancouver-Burrard
Lorne Mayencourt is the MLA for Vancouver-Burrard in the Province of British Columbia. Most of his life's work has been dedicated to helping those in need and he has tirelessly served a wide variety of community causes. As a small business owner with many years in the computer software industry, Lorne gained extensive North American business experience working with Vancouver-based Columbia Computing Services. He managed the opening of the company's regional offices in Washington, DC and New York City before returning to Vancouver as the company's international sales manager. One day, as a close friend began living with the affects of a life-threatening illness, Lorne left it all to be at his friend's side to help in some way to improve his quality of life. Throughout this time Lorne began assisting others and their family and friends deal with the effects of devastating illnesses such as AIDS and cancer and the tragedy of death.

Soon helping others became his passion and to-date Lorne's record of community service is extensive. He is a founding board member of the Life Quilt for Breast Cancer, and held directorships on the Vogue Theatre Restoration Society and the BC Women's Hospital Foundation. Lorne is best known on the West Coast as the founder and, for its first five years, Executive Director of the Vancouver Friends for Life Society, which supports people living with AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Lorne led the fundraising campaign to create Canada's first wellness centre the Diamond Centre for Living. As a volunteer, he has organized events for the community including "Sunday in the Square", a block party for West End seniors and their neighbours.

Currently he serves on the Government Caucus Committee on Education and for 4 years he was a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Legislative Standing Committee on Finance and Governement Services. Lorne has also served as the Caucus Liaison for the Ministry of Advanced Education. As Chair of the Safe Schools Task Force, Lorne investigated ways to reduce bullying and improve student safety. He also served on the Government Caucus Committee on Communities and Safety. More recently, Lorne championed the Safe Streets initiative, resulting in the passage of the Safe Streets Act and the Tresspass Act which help protect BC residents against harassment and aggressive solicitation. He has been instrumental in the creation of Vancouver's groundbreaking Homeless Outreach Program (HOPE) which reaches out to the homeless and assists them in accessing stable income, social services including mental health, addiction services and housing.

Lorne is a Governor General's Meritorious Service Medal recipient, one of our country's highest honours.

Several of Lorne's friends have faced the affects of cancer in their lives. He is excited to join Brandon Schupp in his Mountain of Hope climb to raise $1 million for cancer services for kids.
