Basic Steps to Becoming an RMT in Canada

In addition to performing physical bodywork on a patient under instructor supervision, students must complete an all-encompassing educational regimen including studies of anatomy, neurology, human pathology, physiology and myology, or the study of all muscles in the entire body. Students are expected to learn the relationships between muscle groups, bones, ligaments, joints and all other soft tissues throughout the body in order to properly manipulate them for optimal treatment. The requirements regarding the number of hours spent administering practical, hands-on treatment vary between provinces, but may amount to as many as 3,000. Students are advised to inquire within the specific province in which they plan to practice.

After completing the comprehensive training program and receiving a Certificate of Registration, students must apply for licensing within their province. Fees vary, as does the amount of time between renewals, so most boards provide notice prior to expiration. If a license expires every two years, for example, the license holder will typically receive a notice stating the need for renewal 45 to 65 days in advance. Continuing education programs are frequently required as well, ensuring that licensed therapists are consistently informed of all new advancements and alterations to common practice.
