Slimming down a very broad term: Know the types of Cancer
Cancer is a very broad term used to cover up quite a lot of malignant diseases that are acknowledged all over the world. Medical experts identified more than 150 different types of cancer, which also affects different parts of the human body. The signs and symptoms, the causes, as well as the processes of treating differ on each type of cancer.
This widely known killer disease has the possibility to affect each and every organ in the body. The cancer cells can spread the disease all throughout the body for the reason that cells inside malignant tumors have the capacity to attack nearby organs and tissues as well. In addition to this, it is also possible for these cells to break free from the tumor and go into the patient’s bloodstream, which spreads the virus to other organs, the process referred as metastasis.
Health care experts have been able to classify the cancer types by body system. For instance, when cancerous cells undergo metastasis and have already impinged on other parts of the body, the disease will still be named to the organ where it originated. An example would be if cervical cancer reaches to the lungs, then it will still be diagnosed as cervical cancer and not lung cancer.
Among men and women, the most commonly diagnosed cancer type is the skin cancer. Every year, there is more than one million cases diagnosed in United States, with young people greatly infected compared to the previous years. This is typically caused by too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Generally, there are two types of skin cancer; there is non-melanoma and melanoma cancer.
Respiratory cancer, which is often referred to as lung cancer, is largely caused by heavy cigarette smoking. This highly affects the respiratory system, that’s why health care experts recommend quitting smoking in order to prevent this disease. Another factor would be because of too much exposure to asbestos.
Breast cancer is a common type of cancer among women. Annually, there are over 200,000 women diagnosed with this kind of disease in U.S. alone. There are a few types of breast cancer, which include Invasive types of breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ, Paget’s disease of the nipple, and lobular carcinoma in situ.
Another type of cancer, which affects both adults and children, is brain cancer. The brain tumors it has can be non-cancerous or benign, or cancerous or malignant. It is important to take note that the malignant ones do not frequently extend outside the brain.
Blood cancer or oftentimes identified as lymphoma or leukemia, affects adults and children as well. This is the result when the cells in the bone marrow, which give rise to white blood cells, platelets and red blood cells, become cancerous.
Another broad category of cancer that largely affects every part starting from the esophagus down to the anus is digestive or gastrointestinal cancer. There are sub-categories under this cancer type, and each type is definite and holds its own causes, symptoms and treatments. Among the most common sub-categories are rectal cancer, gastric or stomach cancer, liver cancer, anal cancer, and colon cancer.
