Touch the Sky

A unique program that blends successful healing techniques with a dynamic creative process. Assists in the healing process by addressing the needs of the whole person. An effective educational tool in developing coping skills for families dealing with life-threatening illness. The Touch the Sky Program has been developed for those very special youngsters who are challenged by adversities beyond their years. By using the kit families grow to learn dynamic skills in coping with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Although designed specifically for children aged 5-12 years, the program can be used for all ages.

The program kit includes:

two audio cassettes for children including the audio play "The Lion and Me"
a parent workbook
a children's workbook
a stuffed lion
crayons and bubbles
The program materials are designed to strike a balance. Highly creative techniques capture the imagination and release healing potential while practical techniques help family members cope with daily challenges. Developed by a team of parents and experts the kits reflect a high degree of creativity and professional care.

Families and health care professionals who have tested the kit in real-life situations report the Touch the Sky Program to be an effective tool in assisting the healing process. It encourages parents and children to work together. The techniques are simple and easy to use on a daily basis both at home and in a clinical setting.

The program provides examples of the use of relaxation techniques, imagery exercises and storytelling that can be used directly. Parents will also learn how to develop these techniques with their own child.

"The Lion and Me" presents an interactive story that is an allegory to the disease and healing process. It can be used independently as a fun learning experience and it serves as an example that parents and children can use in the creation of their own stories. Blending a creatively interactive story with an original music score presents a unique approach to healing and coping skills.

The program was developed by Candlelighters parents in Saskatchewan with the support of the Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, Saskatchewan Health and Glaxo Canada. Meet our Production Team Members:

The project has been very fortunate since the beginning to have the creative energies of Dr. Rudy Rozanski as music coordinator and writer/producer of the audio play the "Lion and Me". Dr. Rozanski also composed and performed the entire musical score for the Touch the Sky Program.

The play was directed by developmental dramatist Brian Way who also provided the imagination exercises on "Imagine It" (audio cassette).

David Adams, stress management consultant and author of "Coping with Childhood Cancer", developed the parent workbook.

Dr. Leora Kuttner, Clinical Psychologist and producer of the video "No Tears, No Fears", assisted with both the relaxation/breathing and the guided imagery components of the audio tape.

Barb Kruger, coordinator of the Touch the Sky Project, is a parent of a childhood cancer survivor. She is also a past coordinator of Candlelighters Saskatchewan.
