Media Contact Letter Template

The purpose of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to bring attention to childhood cancer and survivorship issues across Canada. The Childhood Cancer Foundation asks its friends to contact their local media to bring these matters to their attention.

We think that your personalized letters may help to share the story of "our children."

Below is a template that you can personalize and send to local newspapers, newspapers and TV stations. You can direct it by e-mail to the health reporter, producer or editor. A follow-up call or e-mail will ensure they have read it and give you a chance to answer any questions.

If you need any further help, contact us .

Thank you for taking the time to bring more awareness of childhood cancer to Canadians.

Dear ( name of editor/news director/TV show producer ),

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and I want to let you know of some of the advances that have been made in Canada in the treatment of our children, as well as some of the challenges that persist.

Every year in Canada, about 1,500 children are diagnosed with cancer, and 10,000 children are receiving treatment in one of the 17 childhood cancer treatment centres across the country. Tragically, about 700 of them will die.

Treatment of childhood cancer is one of modern medicines success stories. Thirty years ago, few children lived, but now almost 75% are cured of their disease. The research of the past decades has brought us to a place where more children are surviving, but there is a cost. 700 Canadian children die from their disease more than the next five deadly diseases combined, and for those who do survive, life can come at a high price. The surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy used to cure children affects growing bodies and developing minds.

My child ( fill in personal information )

Research in Canada and around the world has caused us to hope for something better for our children. For the first time, the entire pediatric cancer community is daring to talk about a 100% cure rate, and this they are doing with an exhilarating sense of anticipation and expectancy.

However, there remains a great deal of work to be done. Canadians can help by supporting the work of the Childhood Cancer Foundation which funds leading edge research, supports children and families through parent and survivor support groups across the country, and advocates for change to existing laws around parental leave.

We ask you to consider creating a story for your viewers/listeners/readers in September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. A story that will help the voices of 10,000 Canadian children and their families be heard. A story that will inspire your audience to make a difference in the lives of these children, and 1,500 more who every year face a diagnosis of cancer.
