19 year old Calgary teen is cycling 14,000 miles to find a cure for childhood cancer
CALGARY, AB, June 6, 2002 - On Friday, June 7th, Ryan Correy, the creator and cyclist for "Ride for Life" a 14,000 km bicycle tour around Canada and the United States. His goal is to raise over a million dollars for two Cancer charities: The Lance Armstrong Foundation (US) and the Childhood Cancer Foundation ~ Candlelighters (CAN).
A couple of years ago Ryan Correy's high school class was shown an amazing documentary on Terry Fox and his journey to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Ryan was deeply moved by Terry's dedication, unselfishness, and will power. Ryan believed there had to be a way in which he to could help this very important cause. Cancer had struck a number of Ryan's family members and friends, and he felt that the best way he could lend his support was to follow in Terry Fox's shoesand the "Ride for Life" was created.
"Every year 1,400 children are newly diagnosed with cancer and as the cure or remission rate increases and mortality decreases, it is difficult to meet the growing needs of these children and their families without the dedicated support of individuals as Ryan Correy", said Val Figliuzzi, Chairman of the Board, Childhood Cancer Foundation - Candlelighters Canada.
The Childhood Cancer Foundation - Candlelighters Canada is the only national non-profit organization that is completely focused on the needs of Canada's children affected by cancer. Candlelighters Canada is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those experiencing the effects of childhood cancer through the provision of information / resources, parent support and the promotion of research. 100% of the Ryan's proceeds will go towards research into the cure for childhood cancer.
