Back To School

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

School re-entry after a diagnosis of cancer is a time of change and challenge for the student with cancer, their family, school staff and classmates. Most children and teens with cancer will return to school soon after diagnosis and inevitably they will face difficulties both academically and socially. In addition, teachers and peers, like others who know the child, will experience feelings of sadness, guilt, uncertainty, helplessness and are therefore naturally apprehensive for the child's return to school.

Candlelighters Canada is developing a Back To School program that will ease the child and teen with cancer back into school and will also prepare school staff and classmates for the return of the child or teen. Candlelighters Canada has the benefit of expertise and experience of health professionals that specialize in paediatric oncology.

The goal of this program is to develop a kit of information for elementary and high school teachers and students. The kit will contain audio visual resources and a users guide to help students and teachers understand and cope with the unique impact of childhood cancer. When the kits are available to schools, the schools will be notified.
