Max J. Coppes, MD, PhD, MBA
Dr. Max J. Coppes is the Director of the Southern Alberta Children's Cancer Program and a Professor of Oncology and Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Since 2004 he has been Chair of the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta in Pediatric Oncology Research at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Coppes graduated in 1982 from the University of Leiden Medical School in the Netherlands, and subsequently was registered as a Pediatrician in 1987. He trained for 3 years in pediatric hematology/oncology in Amsterdam, Paris, and Toronto. Before moving to Calgary, he worked for two years as a staff member in the Department of Cancer Biology at the Cleveland Clinic where he completed his PhD, which he defended at the University of Amsterdam in 1992. In 2004 he obtained his MBA from the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Management.
His research interests encompass both clinical and laboratory aspects of childhood cancer. Dr. Coppes is a prolific researcher with over 120 publications. He is an internationally recognized expert in Wilms tumor, the most common kidney cancer of childhood. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), the vice chair of the Council of Canadian Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Directors, and sits on the editorial board of four medical journals. He is a Board member of the Childhood Cancer Foundation as well as of the National Childhood Cancer Foundation (USA). He is a member of the Board of West Island College and a member of the Patrons Council, Chefs for UNICEF Calgary.
Dr. Coppes is married to Ms. Arty Coppes-Zantinga, with whom he writes articles on the history of Medicine, and has two sons (Lucas and Michael) and one daughter (Mieke).
