Teen Network

The Teen Network had its first Provincial Coordiantors' meeting by teleconference on Sunday, November 1st. It was decided by the Coordinators to follow in the footsteps of our friends down under and call our group CanTeen. CanTeen - The Australian Teenage Cancer Patient's Society Ltd. Has was established in 1985 and have agreed to be our friends and mentors as we develop this program in Canada.

CanTeen's mission statement is

SUPPORTING, DEVELOPING and EMPOWERING teenagers living with cancer

BY

Providing a high quality Australia-wide peer support network of teenagers with cancer and their teenage brothers and sisters, who share experiences, have fun, offer resources and promote understanding, well-being and leadership.

The activities of the group will include (but are not limited to!) creating a newsletter, a web-site, computer link-up, local get-togethers, national workshops, and a teen-visiting program for newly diagnosed teens. An important principle of CanTeen is that while support is received from concerned adults, the group is managed by its members - the young people. As we grow, input by members will determine the direction that the group takes.

Our first tasks as a group are to officially license the name CanTeen for use in Canada, and develop an information pamphlet for distribution across this great land of ours. We are eager to get going and spread the word that teens are going to be there to support other teens!

If you want to learn more about the network, become a member, or volunteer to help, you can contact a Provincial Coordinator directly, through the National Coordinator, Regional Coordinators or Candlelighters main office.
